I love a book that pokes fun of the injustices of the past-especially when it involves women being underestimated. The series is darkly funny and the first book is the story of two rival students at an elite zombie-fighting academy, Jane and Katherine, who are unwillingly caught up in an evil pioneer settlement scheme in Kansas. This series is set in an alternate-history 19th century United States, where Civil War ends after the walking dead rose at Gettysburg, with both sides fighting the undead in unresolved union. The first book in this series, Dread Nation, was a near-perfect book, so my hopes for Deathless Divide were high. If I could excise the parts of the books that frustrated me, I would be even happier. Genre: Historical: American, Horror, LGBTQIA, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Young Adultĭeathless Divide has women killing zombies while building complicated friendships, and that was delightful enough to make me (almost) happy.

Now, Higginbotham brings us closer to the truth behind this colossal tragedy. Midnight In Chernobyl is an indelible portrait of history's worst nuclear disaster, of human resilience and ingenuity and the lessons learned when mankind seeks to bend the natural world to his will - lessons which, in the face of climate change and other threats - remain not just vital but necessary. It is a story that has long remained in dispute, clouded from the beginning in secrecy, propaganda, and misinformation. Drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews conducted over the course of more than ten years, as well as letters, unpublished memoirs, and documents from recently-declassified archives, this book makes for a masterful non-fiction thriller.Ĭhernobyl has become lodged in the collective nightmares of the world: shorthand for the spectral horrors of radiation poisoning, for a dangerous technology slipping its leash, for ecological fragility, and for what can happen when a dishonest and careless state endangers not only its own citizens, but all of humanity. The book explores the causes and consequences of the 1986 explosion at the Soviet Union’s Chernobyl Atomic Energy Station in Ukraine, which killed at least 31 plant workers and. Adam Higginbotham has written a harrowing and compelling narrative which brings the 1986 disaster to life through the eyes of the men and women who witnessed it firsthand. Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World’s Greatest Nuclear Disaster (2019) is a non-fiction book by the English author and journalist Adam Higginbotham. The story of Chernobyl is more complex, more human, and more terrifying than the Soviet myth. Olivia’s dreams are on the verge of coming true when her boss gives her the chance to take charge of a last-minute wedding for an influential couple. This book is available now-it was released February 1-but I read an ARC and wrote this review prior to that release. Not only is it a romance, it’s also the third book of a series (although in my defense I didn’t know that until after I’d finished it). So not my usual thing, although I have been known to bend my newly reinstated no-romance rule for LGBTQ+ books. That’s the case for Count Your Lucky Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur. I’m a big fan of grabbing ARCs at work, so sometimes I pick one up even if there is a near-zero percent chance that I would’ve read it in any other context. It’s Valentine’s Day, so it seemed only appropriate to post a romance review. But the bear in this book paws down he’s got to be the dimmest, most slow-witted, brilliantly stupid bear to come along in years. You know, bears may stand for adults in some way, because they’re big, they’re ungainly, they’re goofy. Indubitably hip, this will find plenty of admirers. Adults and older children will chuckle mordantly at rabbit's sudden disappearance, while young children might actually wonder, with Squirrel, where the rabbit has gone. Klassen's animation and design skills are evident on every page in this sly, subversive tale. Read aloud, this story will offer many sublime insights into how young readers comprehend an illustrated text that leaves out vital information, and will leave young sleuths reeling with theories about what just happened. A charmingly wicked little book.ĭeliberately understated, with delectable results… Skillful characterizations though they're simply drawn and have little to say, each animal emerges fully realized. A marvelous book in the true dictionary sense of “marvel": it is a wonderful and astonishing thing, the kind of book that makes child laugh and adult chuckle, and both smile in appreciation.
